Maintenance

Fix the cause, not the stain

Painting over a damp patch is not a repair. It is a way of paying for the same problem twice.

Neatly finished galley kitchen with tiled walls and black hardware after repair work

Most of the maintenance calls we get on this coast come down to water arriving somewhere it should not: rising damp through a failed or bridged damp-proof course, penetrating damp through wind-driven rain on an exposed elevation, a roof detail that was never flashed properly, or condensation in a room with no ventilation.

Those four have four different fixes, and applying the wrong one is why so many homeowners have had the same wall repaired three times. We diagnose first. That sometimes means waiting for weather, and it always means looking outside the room where the stain is.

We also handle the honest small stuff: storm damage, cracked plaster, failed sealant, tired paintwork, a gate that has dropped, a gutter that has given up. Small jobs are how most of our clients meet us before they trust us with a big one.

What we put right

  • Rising, penetrating and lateral damp diagnosed and treated at source
  • Roof leaks, flashing failures, ridge and valley repairs
  • Waterproofing of flat roofs, parapets, balconies and shower floors
  • Structural and settlement cracks assessed and repaired
  • Storm and wind damage, including insurance repair work
  • Gutters, downpipes, fascias and stormwater
  • Plaster, screed, tiling and paint repairs, inside and out

Our approach

How we approach a repair

01

Diagnose before quoting

We would rather come out twice and get the cause right than sell you a treatment for the wrong problem.

02

Tell you when it is not urgent

Not every crack is structural. Where a thing can safely be monitored rather than repaired, we will say so, even though it costs us the job.

03

Repairs that match

A repair that is visibly a repair is only half done. Plaster texture, tile grout and paint sheen all get matched to what is already there.

Questions

Home Maintenance & Repairs: the things people ask

There is damp on my wall. What is causing it?

It depends where the damp is. Low on the wall with a tide mark suggests rising damp. Patchy and high after wind-driven rain suggests penetrating damp. Around windows in winter suggests condensation. We will identify which before proposing anything.

Do you do insurance repair work?

Yes. We can quote in the format your insurer needs and document the damage properly for the claim.

Is there a minimum job size?

No. Small jobs are welcome, and they are how most long-term client relationships start. We will be straight with you about scheduling if it is a half-day task.
